A new way to get around – motorized shoes vie for this year’s James’ Dyson Award

Peter Treadway has spent the last eight or so years working on his recent entry for Dyson’s international student design competition. Treadways, a lightweight wirelessly controlled motorized shoe is designed to get you from one place to another without a second thought.

The shoes conceptually began as a recreational sports suit, something for ambitious free runners, those urban acrobatics performing street stunts such as flips, twists and tumbling. However, after relocation from New York to Los Angeles Treadway required less free sports and more functional transportation. “I was shocked to learn that in LA there was a waiting list for train station parking permits near my home,” says Treadway. “It’s over a mile from my house and I needed a quick way to get back and forth without a car.”

With a fashion background, Treadway designed the shoes as wearable accessories. They are light and can be worn comfortably for walking or rolling, ideal for quick trips where the commitment to bikes or blades isn’t possible.

“These aren’t for the “lazy,” you have to be aware of your surroundings and they still require some work- like with a bicycle.” He states, “these will get you around that Last Mile.”

After more than 40 prototypes, the design has progressed from heavy scooter parts with sit and/or lay down iterations, to lithium polymer battery powered shoes.

As with all of the US James Dyson Award entries, Treadway’s design will be competing against entries by students from 17 other counties around the world for a 30,000 prize. The last call for entries is Thursday, July 8.
